Going out with your dog in spring & summer is just simply fun, isn’t it? This is one of my favorite photos – the last beach visited with Chuckie before he passed last year.
Strengthen the Hind Legs on Sand
A couple of weeks ago, I had a workshop called “Preparing for your dog’s senior years” and talked about varying terrain is good for strengthening muscles.
Heading out to a beach this summer? Walking on sand with your dog will be a great exercise as your dog will have no choice but to lift his/her legs higher than usual. Especially if your dog normally doesn’t bend his/her knees much, walking on sand will be perfect.
Walk on Various Terrain
Try purposefully let your dog walk on different types of terrain, such as sand, gravel (big/small, smooth/coarse) and cushion ground besides cement and grass. Your dog will get to use his/her muscles and pads differently on difference surfaces.
So, next time when you make a plan for a little outing or just a walk, keep this in mind. Your dog may think that you two are just having fun, but you have a hidden agenda… having fun and doing some injury preventative core exercises at the same time. How efficient is that!
