Kidney – The Focal Point for Life Energy
According to the Five Element Theory in Traditional Chinese Medicine (“TCM”), our kidneys govern the vital life force energy.
In other words, kidneys have a lot to do with the aging process.
Winter corresponds to the kidney system according to TCM, so adding ingredients known to strengthen the function of kidney now is a good idea, not only for senior dogs but all of us!
Foods That Are Good For the Kidney – Something Red, Something Black
What we have today for Dewey’s dinner: Red = Goji berries, Black = Black rice
Red & Black Foods are High in Anthocyanin, too!
Anthocyanin is an antioxident that is considered good for eyes.
You might hear often that blueberries are good for eyes; that’s because of its anthocyanin.
So if you have a senior dog with weak eyes, consider adding red or black ingredients in meals as well.
Examples of red & black ingredients:
Black rice, buck wheat, red beans, black beans, black lentils, kelp, seaweed (or “hijiki”), black sesame seeds.
Blackberries, blueberries, rasberries, goji berries, etc.
Happy healthy home-cooked meals for our dogs!
